Doctorate in Naval Architecture, Marine and Ocean Engineering

Presentation

The Doctoral Program in Naval and Ocean Engineering is integrated into the Technical University of Madrid R & D strategy and its aim is to place this university internationally in the marine and oceanic sector from a development and use perspective of its technology. It comes from former PhD programmes and has been devised to train PhD students in theories and methodologies of greater relevance in the major research topics in Naval and Ocean Engineering.

This program makes up the third cycle of university education in the area of Naval and Ocean Engineering, training PhD candidates in more advanced aspects of research in a technological area that has always been important in Spain. Due to the current global competition in areas such as capacity or price, training must be based on aspects of innovation and technological advancement. It is for this reason that providing society with doctors with adequate training in the area will enable Spain to take up the challenge of advancing in the knowledge of marine and ocean technology, which will  no doubt have a significant impact on the sustainable use of oceans with resources of all kinds which should be soon a fundamental pillar of development. The research lines offered by the program are:

1) Hydrodynamics and Sloshing.

2) Experimental, numerical and computer aided design ships and marine artefacts Development.

3) Energy exploitation of marine currents.

4) Fuel cells and hydrogen. Ocean and naval applications.

5) Hybrid Materials. Ocean and naval applications.

6) Welding. Corrosion. Ocean and naval applications.

7) Structures and marine constructions.

8) Safety and shipping.

9) Aquaculture and Fisheries.

The program promotes to enhance partnerships in national and international cooperation and participation in international R & D and in collaboration with the business sector as a vehicle for financing research activities. Research teams that collaborate actively participate in the Program in R & D  in different national and international areas, joining in consortia of several universities, research centres and industry. It has the collaboration of some groups with companies in the development of R& D financed by each company.

Candidates that meet the conditions of access will be admitted to this PhD program; they will be selected taking into account the specific requirements. For the purpose of admission process, it must be born in mind that this doctoral program is aimed at students with a technical background, holding a university degree in engineering, although students with other university degrees are also accepted. Specifically, the PhD Program in Naval and Ocean Engineering is primarily aimed at those students having a degree in Naval Architecture or a degree in Marine Engineering after having completed a Master’s degree in Naval and Ocean Engineering.

The Doctoral Program in Naval and Ocean Engineering has an admission criteria, profile A, which corresponds to those students who, having completed a degree grade, with the competencies set out in the memories of the Degrees in Architecture Naval and Maritime Engineering offered by the UPM, they have also completed further training in the area with a Master whose skills are equivalent to those obtained in the Master in Naval and Ocean Engineering. This reference profile allows access without the need for specific training supplements.

In addition, the PhD Program in Naval and Ocean Engineering Admission considers another admission criteria, profile B, corresponding to those students whose undergraduate and master have given them the skills acquired in the Masters of the related areas of engineering, those who have been heirs of former degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, Industrial Engineering in its different branches, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical and Organization, or Mining including new qualifications related to Power Engineering.

Under the agreement adopted by the Governing Council of the UPM (12/19/2013) on the criteria for accessing to PhD Programmes regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011, UPM students shall have access to official doctoral program who hold a Spanish official university degree obtained according to university regulations prior to RD 1393/2077, that qualify for accessing to university Master's teachings officers a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, of which at least 60  must be of Master’s  level. Out of the total of 300 completed credits or more 60 ETCS Master’s level are considered for admission to PhD programs. This recognition does not entail the right to request a university master's degree. All this is without prejudice to each Commission a PhD program at UPM can set additional requirements, in accordance with verified reports for admission.
